we may infer that is the case from what we see, for , in united states, where subsistence is , and there is of . if means were suddenly doubled in britain, our number would be doubled. the greater death-rate of in poorest classes is also very important; as as greater mortality, from various diseases, of inhabitants of and miserable houses, at ages. the effects of epidemics and wars are counterbalanced, and more than counterbalanced, in placed under favourable conditions. emigration also comes in as check, but, with extremely poor classes, not to great extent. there is to , as has remarked, that reproductive power is less in , than in races. we know nothing positively on head, for savages no census has been taken; but from the concurrent testimony of , and of who have long resided with , it appears that families are small, and large ones rare.

with savages the difficulty of subsistence occasionally limits their number in more direct manner than with people, for tribes periodically suffer from severe famines. at times savages are forced to much bad food, and their health can hardly fail to injured. many accounts have been published of protruding stomachs and emaciated limbs after and during famines. they are , also, compelled to much, and, as was assured in , their infants perish in numbers. as are , depending chiefly on extreme seasons, all tribes must fluctuate in . they cannot steadily and regularly increase, as is artificial increase in supply of food. savages, when hard pressed, encroach on other's territories, and war is result; but are almost always at with neighbours. they are to accidents on and water in search for ; and in countries they suffer much from the larger beasts of . even in , districts have been depopulated by ravages of . malthus has discussed these several checks, but does not lay stress enough on is the most important of , namely infanticide, especially of infants, and the habit of abortion. these practices now prevail in quarters of world; and infanticide seems formerly to prevailed, as .) has shewn, on more extensive scale.
these practices appear to have originated in recognising the difficulty, or the impossibility of all the infants that . licentiousness may also be to foregoing checks; but does not follow from failing means of ; though there is to that some cases (as in ) it has been intentionally encouraged as of keeping down the population.. ..
