no doubt a with mind, if social affections and sympathies are developed, will be to actions, and may have a sensitive conscience. but renders the imagination more vivid and strengthens the habit of and comparing past impressions, will make the conscience more sensitive, and may even somewhat compensate for social affections and sympathies. the moral nature of has reached its present standard, partly through the advancement of reasoning powers and consequently of public opinion, but from his sympathies having been rendered more tender and widely diffused through the effects of , example, instruction, and reflection. it is improbable that long practice virtuous tendencies may be . with more civilised races, the conviction of existence of -seeing deity has had a influence on advance of . ultimately man does not accept the praise or of fellows as sole guide, though few escape this influence, but habitual convictions, controlled by , afford him the safest rule.
